1

Change router admin credentials immediately

Many home routers still use default admin usernames and passwords. Attackers actively test these defaults.

Set a unique admin password and store it in your password manager.

Action checklist

  • Log in to your router admin panel.
  • Change default admin username or password.
  • Store router credentials in your password manager.
2

Enable WPA3 or WPA2-AES encryption

Your Wi-Fi encryption setting protects traffic between your devices and router.

Use WPA3 where available, or WPA2-AES if WPA3 is not supported.

Action checklist

  • Set security mode to WPA3 or WPA2-AES.
  • Avoid WEP or open network modes.
  • Set a long, unique Wi-Fi passphrase.
3

Isolate guest and IoT traffic

Smart TVs, cameras, and guest devices should not share unrestricted access with your personal devices.

Create a separate guest network and move non-critical devices there.

Action checklist

  • Enable guest Wi-Fi.
  • Move visitor and smart home devices to guest network.
  • Disable local network access on guest network if available.
4

Keep firmware updated

Router firmware updates patch vulnerabilities and improve stability.

Schedule a monthly check if automatic updates are not supported.

Action checklist

  • Enable automatic firmware updates if supported.
  • Manually check for updates once per month.
  • Reboot router after updates complete.
